Overview

This 1973 BMW 2002tii stands as a quintessential example of timeless design and engineering, having undergone meticulous restoration by premier marque specialists in Southern California. Presented in its original and evocative Baikal Metallic Blue with a Black interior, chassis 2763678 retains its alluring originality. With a history rooted in Southern California, this roundie has been preserved its entire life, ensuring a remarkably preserved base for its restoration in 2016.

The previous custodian, a distinguished BMW CCA concours judge, and former national Concours victor, embarked on this labor of love in 2014 with an initial intent to gift it to his spouse. However, plans changed upon the acquisition of a 1971 cabriolet, deemed a more suitable present. Over 300 hours were dedicated to overseeing this restoration, with meticulous attention to detail and authenticity. The choice of this particular chassis for restoration was no coincidence; its exceptionally dry body shell with matching numbers stood out as an ideal canvas.

In pursuit of retaining its authentic essence, original parts were utilized wherever feasible. The vehicle now sits on four new, factory-correct OEM alloys wrapped in Michelin XAS tires, and its lighting is enhanced by new front and rear lenses. The restoration extended beyond aesthetics, with all-new OEM rubber gaskets installed across various parts of the car, underlining the thoroughness of the project.

The restoration work carried out over 18 months, includes a stunning $12,000 (in 2016) paint job in the original Baikal metallic blue and a comprehensive $6,000 interior overhaul. This overhaul features OEM materials and craftsmanship, from the headliner to the seating and even the trunk floors. The vehicle's trim and chrome have been meticulously refurbished, blending new OEM parts with beautifully refinished original trim. The engine, fuel injection system, and suspension have seen comprehensive refurbishments, employing OEM parts and the expertise of respected specialists.

It was shown at the Legends of the Autobahn during Monterey Car Week in 2017 and took home first place. A true testament to the correctness and quality of the restoration.
