Overview
They are only original once — and this 1973 Datsun 240Z is a wonderful reminder of why that phrase matters.
Presented here is a remarkably preserved and fully documented 240Z that appears to have avoided nearly every fate that befell so many early Japanese sports cars. It has not been over-restored, heavily modified, neglected, or “improved” beyond recognition. Instead, it remains what collectors increasingly seek: an honest, highly original survivor with the right history, the right preservation, and the kind of character that simply cannot be recreated.
Originally sold new by Keegan Imports in San Jose, California in July 1973, this 240Z remained with its first owner for an extraordinary 44 years. That kind of long-term single ownership is rare in any classic car, but it is especially meaningful with an early Z. These cars were often used hard, modified, repainted, or lost to rust decades ago. This example, however, benefited from California ownership, careful stewardship, and a life spent in a far more forgiving climate than most.
In 2017, the original owner passed the car to its second caretaker, whose ownership lasted only a brief period before the car was acquired by an East Coast 240Z collector. While in his care, the car received thoughtful attention, including correction of a small ding and tuning work performed by Datsun Spirit, a respected name among Z-car enthusiasts. It was then enjoyed as part of a larger collection before being sold as part of a five-car package.
Among those five cars, this 240Z quickly stood apart. After 15 years in the restoration business, it becomes clear that even the finest restored cars rarely carry the same presence as a truly original example. Restoration can correct, improve, and perfect, but originality tells a story. This car tells that story beautifully.
Showing just over 65,000 miles, this 240Z presents as a proper time capsule. The original paint remains excellent, the interior is also beautifully preserved, and the dash is crack-free — a detail that will immediately mean something to anyone familiar with early Z-cars. The engine bay and chassis have been dry ice cleaned, not to disguise flaws, but to carefully reveal and preserve the quality that was already there.
Over the past several years, the car has been carefully dialed in, with attention paid to the small details that make an original car enjoyable to use and rewarding to own. The result is a no-nonsense, highly preserved 240Z that feels honest in all the right ways.
The Datsun 240Z helped redefine the affordable sports car when it arrived in America. With its long hood, fastback profile, inline-six engine, independent suspension, and approachable reliability, it delivered style and performance that challenged established European sports cars of the period. Today, early Z-cars are finally receiving the recognition they deserve, and the best original examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
This car’s appeal lies not only in what it is, but in what it has avoided becoming. It has not been cut up, flared, swapped, rusted away, or restored into someone else’s interpretation of perfection. Thanks to its dry-climate history, devoted first owner, and subsequent enthusiast caretakers, it has survived with its identity intact.
For the collector seeking a truly original 240Z — one with documentation from new, long-term ownership history, excellent original paint, a preserved interior, a crack-free dash, and the kind of honesty that can only come with time — this 1973 Datsun 240Z is an exceptional opportunity.
Some cars are restored to impress. This one simply survived beautifully.
